95 Crave Vancouver Announces New Program Director

Astral Media has announced the appointment of Ronnie Stanton as Program Director of radio station 95 Crave in Vancouver, effective Oct. 14.

Stanton is currently the Group PD for 10 radio stations on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast in Australia. In the last ratings survey on the Sunshine Coast, Stanton’s station, Hot 91, recorded more listeners than second and third market stations combined.

Stanton’s background includes extensive experience as a PD, Music Director, and Morning Show Host. His career has taken him through Melbourne where he helped launched Nova 100, and was part of the team that took the station to #1 in 15 weeks. In addition he has won numerous Australian industry awards including Best Program Director and Best On-Air Team.

“We’re thrilled to have Ronnie joining us” said Brad Phillips, VP and GM of 95 Crave. “We’re very impressed with Ronnie’s creativity and passion for personality radio – as well as his love for our city. He has a suitcase full of ideas and he’s ready to turn them loose on Vancouver!”

Terry DiMonte hosting Montreal noon hour show from Calgary

Terry DiMonte is back on the air in Montreal at Corus’s mainstream FM, Q92. The long-standing CHOM radio personality is hosting a noon hour magazine format with guests using an ISDN line from his regular base at the Corus station Q107 in Calgary.

Guests on the show far have included his current Calgary co-host Peppermint Patti and Q92 personality Maureen Holloway.

“The response we’ve received from Terry’s return to the Montreal airwaves has been tremendous” say Program Director Chris Kennedy. “Terry’s excited — it gives him a chance to stay close with the people who have been supporting him as listeners as well as a way to keep in touch with his home city. As he says, this is a great opportunity to do something that doesn’t happen very often and to have a lot of fun doing it. Imagine — Aaron Rand and Terry Dimonte — both on the same station doing their own shows!”

Appointments:

PD Rod Kitter reports that Greg Krienke (also known as Greg Daniels) is moving to Saskatoon Media Group’s CJWW 600 from Whitecourt, AB New Country XM105, to fill the swing/overnight announcer slot.

Much MTV Group has named Dave Caporicci Director of Program Marketing and Brand Partnerships, Much MTV Group, CTV Inc. Caporicci has worked in the branding department for some time and has been with the CHUM TV organization for the past 12 years.

Tom Webster has been promoted to Vice President, Strategy and Marketing for Edison Media Research, a leader in marketing and opinion research. Webster joined Edison as a VP in ‘04, and has conducted qualitative and quantitative research projects in almost every major US market and throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Mike Tyler has been named Assistant Program Director/Music Director for Jack-FM, Toronto…Jacqui Delaney joins the Bill Carroll Morning Show at CFRB with Rick Hodge. Tyler had previously worked at the then-Standard station as a show host and sport anchor/reporter. She was previously with The Bear in Ottawa…Other BEAR news: Dylan Black shifts to the evening slot at the Ottawa station; and longtime broadcaster Katherine Dines (a.k.a. Katherine Craig) returns to co-host BEARLY AWAKE with Cub Carson at the same station.

Congratulations to:

Tim Day at Red Deer, AB ‘KG Country (CKGY, recipient of the CCMA secondary market Music Director of the Year, delivered Sunday, Sept. 7 in Winnipeg.

Scott Phillips, named Music Director of the Year, Major Market, at CKRY-FM in Calgary, AB

GM Gerry Siemens, PD Gord Eno and the CJJR-FM GM crew in Vancouver for the 2nd consecutive win as Major Market Radio Station of the Year. ‘JRfm was also named 2008 Country Station of the Year at Canadian Music Week in March of this year so they are clearly doing something right.

KICX-FM and morning show Co-host Carey Moran in Orillia, ON. The station claimed won secondary market Station of the Year, and Moran won the On Air Personality in the same category for the third successive year. KICX has won six out of the last seven years.

CFCW Edmonton’s Sharon Mallon and Danny Hooper, named major market Country Radio Personalities of the Year; in his acceptance speech, Hooper had the audience in stitches when he stated: “. “The nicest thing about this job is I get to wake up every morning with Sharon but I don’t have to sleep with her.”

Dave Baker, the CJVR-FM cast and crew that package Canadian Coast to Coast out of Melfort, SK.

Also worth noting:

Toronto’s mainstream print media offers little broadcast radio coverage these days, although Radio 2 has been a subject of innumerable articles. Astral scored some ink with the launch of the Virgin Radio brand, and the subsequent arrival of Richard Branson on-air at the newly minted Mix99, and CFRB has had heads turning and keypads working overtime with its recent guerilla marketing campaign using street bums to tote signboards asking whether panhandling should be banned, hydro pole signage questioning the effectiveness of outdoor advertising and several other similarly off-beat, low-cost, attention grabbing campaign components to get people talking about and, hopefully, listening to the once dominant AM talk radio station.

With the passing on of Richard Dolph Buchanan, owner/operator of Preston, ON CKPC AM  comes the rumour that the family owned station could be going on the market. CKPT has been a family owned operation for 85 years…Has anyone noticed that the “news” is slowly disappearing? CFRB has cancelled the news on the half hour, except during drive times, and 640Toronto has done likewise and upped the ante by cancelling the news on the hour and entirely during the overnight/early morning hours. Given the fact that there are two major elections in the offing, it seems a curious time to be cutting back on news and information.
