Don’t believe a word I say with Bob Segarini

The Weekend Roundup

A&R Online Volume 5

cdsAs always, you can hear these tracks as you read about them by going to www.radiothatdoesntsuck and click on ‘A & R Online Vol 5′. This edition of A&R Online is short and to the point…I thought you might like being able to hear these new tracks in under 20 minutes, just enough time for a smoke and a cup of coffee. Also, my main computer is still being a dick, so no V/T, just music.

1. Marianas Trench-All To Myself

Another great track from their latest CD, MT continues to amaze me with their songwriting ability, wonderfully radio friendly production, and exciting live performances. They’ve got it all except the success they deserve, and I’m willing to bet they’ll have that too before too long.

Notes To Self-Days Like These

Young Canadians with a release on BBE out of England. This track is the first song to come across my desk that heralds the arrival of summer. It’s a lazy, warm weather groove, great lyrics, and conjures up 4 best buds in a tricked-out ‘64 Chevy rag-top, cruisin’ down the main drag, let’s say Richmond Street’s club strip here in Toronto, checkin’ out the ladies in their summer dresses with this tune playing at just the right volume. Damn!

  1. Thirsty Howell-Weather Balloons or Satellites

…and this is the 2nd track that brought summer into the room. A little Steely Dan, a little smooth jazz, and a lot of melodic groove. An excellent piece of music from an artist I am not familiar with at all. More, please…

  1. Lawrie Ingles-Everything Happens For A Rhyme

This track has not been released yet because it doesn’t have a label. It should. You may have heard me mention Lawrie in this column a few times, because of his talent and love of music. He and another great local unsung talent, Brian Gagnon, put this track together towards a CD’s worth of Lawrie’s fine songs. Let me know what you think about this one at segarini@fyimusic.ca Let me know what you think about any of the tracks you read about here and hear on A&R Online…and Happy Birthday, Lawrie.

Fail Of The Week

As much as I hate to admit it, I am not really sure if this is a fail or a win, I mean…Jesus, it’s BACON! In a squeeze bottle!

squeez-bacon

Watch the video here:

…and if that’s not enough:

bacon-ballsThere’s also a ‘personal lubricant’ called “BaconLube”, but I can’t remember where I put the damn picture, so the hell with it…my arteries are already clogging just thinking about all this wonderful bacon…

Win of the week

It’s true. The creativity is all over the net. This is hilarious, as are the others you’ll find in the menu on the right. Winwinwin indeed…

Cheap Shots

Rush Limbaugh

When is somebody going to deflate this smug, overblown, bag of hot air?

And to think he started out as a Top 40 Jock…where are THOSE airchecks?

The Radio Blame Game

Enough, already. How about declaring a moratorium on the never-ending articles about why radio is in such dire straits, and start making suggestions as to what to do about the problems? It seems to me that we could at least try some of the ideas people come up with, give them a year or two, and if they don’t seem to be working, stop and deploy another possible solution. The same applies to the record business. You know that some of the suggestions floating around have merit. Maybe it’s time the Powers That Be realize that the solutions they’ve been trying are not working, and try something else.

Jack In The Box, In and Out Burger, Pinks Hot Dogs, Del Taco, IHOP, and The Waffle House

Why are there no franchises in Canada? Why? Why? WHY?

For the love of God, somebody do something about it!

The Toronto Traffic Authority

Hey, fellas…want to ease the traffic here?

Time the damn lights, free up some parking spaces, make bicyclists pay the same fees and take a written test and road test to get a license, and be responsible for the same kinds of fines and rules that drivers have to live with, give cars the right of way, (what’s easier to stop…a 140 pound person on a bike, or 2 tons of automobile?)…and time the damn lights!

Don’t forget this weeks query: Name the artists who you think are past their ‘best before’ date. The acts you feel should start staying home, gardening, or going to the convenience store on their Rascals to get some low fat yogurt…and as an added bonus, which new artists out there do you think could, or deserve to, replace them?

Please submit your responses to segarini@fyimusic.ca before 11:59, Friday, April 3rd. We look forward to reading what you have to say…

That’s enough for now. Email me at segarini@fyimusic.ca with your comments, complaints, and thoughts…and remember…don’t believe a word I say.
