Oh but if the music industry took a chapter and verse from an agency that could put some humour and common sense into the dragon known as home copying. Instead, umpteen musicians, gadget manufacturers and lobbyists with hidden agendas constantly mislead the public, and let the music biz piss off the fans. A new tongue in British cheek video commissioned by ISP Talk Talk uses bad 80′s pop to take on the more questionable arguments against file sharing. “Home Taping Is Killing Music” is part of a broader campaign Don’t Disconnect.us lobbying against proposed British laws that would have ISP’s act as internet police shutting off and even prosecuting offenders.
Musician Dan Bull, whose letters to Lily Allen and Lord Mandelson both become huge hits on YouTube, has penned another ditty; this time about the music industry’s consistent refusal to accept or adapt to new technology, from the gramophone to the jukebox to commercial radio to the internet. His song, and accompanying video courtesy of TalkTalk, focuses on the most famous campaign, the ill-judged 80s classic, Home Taping is Killing Music.
The purposefully untalented clones of Madonna, George Michaels and Adam Ant singing and dancing to a cheesy soundtrack are reasons enough to watch this video. But be sure to hang in until near the end where we’re reminded of all of the other at risk industries ( i.e.”Home sleeping is killing hotels”). Thanks to Hypebot for bringing this funny but negative viral video to our attention.
