In today’s Mailbag: Denise Donlan! The Segarini Band! BRUUUCE!!!

Quick Comments:

We lost a couple of decent and talented people last week. Besides Soupy Sales, who had a good, 83 year run, we lost Foot In Cold Water guitarist and artist Paul Naumann to liver failure, and Bart Bishop, younger brother of songwriter and dear friend Rand Bishop to a heart attack. Both were 57 and far too young. Bart’s music was good enough to attract the Moody Blues, who signed his band Providence, to their Threshold label, and his contribution as co-writer with Rand and I to the Wackers track I Like on the Wackering Heights album, showed me that his talent was similar to his brother’s, one of the finest writers out there.

Paul’s musical contributions to FICW and other projects is a thing of legend, even giving him a place on Robin Trower’s website as one of the most fluid and melodic guitarists of the rock era. Save us a table close to the stage, boys…

Big show coming up in Toronto on November 14th with Grant Smith and The Power, George Oliver, Rita Chiarelli, and other fine artists with the great sounds of Toronto’s R&B sound being played by the originators. Details over the next couple of weeks.

FYIMusic will be running a 2 part interview with Steve Negus of Saga and his manager, George Roche written by Lisa McDonald, our resident inquisitor. There are great inside stories about Saga and Steve’s new CD and time spent on the rock and roll frontlines, and a discussion of he and George’s latest project, which will be of interest to every musician that reads this site. The interview will run Tuesday and Thursday of this week. Do not miss…

Here’s this week’s Mailbag…

S. White: Mr. Seg, The only way to describe what I’m feelin’ is like a near ‘out of body’ experience! Watching the episodes from http://www.FromDarylsHouse.com and thinking, someone pinch me…I must be dreaming. Huge fan of Hall & Oats, getting to see him perform (Daryl) and with all these artists is unbelievable. Singing with Smokey Robinson…just OMG!! Hate sounding like a teenage school girl, but this is just the best.
Thank you for bringing this to your readers. Oh, and yes, “The Carleton” is the best place to hear live music, drink beer and eat lots of scallops! When you visit, let me know and I promise to take you to Alexander Keith’s Brewery…I’ll buy the drinks. Fans of Keelor/Cuddy are going nuts about them performing at the Carleton…
http://www.thecarleton.ca/

SEG SAYS: Mike and Mike, Campbell and Rhoades), are two alumni from the glory days of MUCHMUSIC, and dreamers who realized one of the best club/restaurants in Canada. Give them my best when you see them…and ask Jim and Greg to sing “Close To You”, like they did at Steve Anthony’s birthday party…

Toni: As a member of the “I Should of Just Said No Club” that other Jack & Coke pic…lol. Enjoyed the mail bag, thanks Bob. Raining here in Nevada :(

SEG SAYS: You know the old saying, Toni: “I have a lot of will power…I just don’t have any ‘won’t’ power”.

The Segarini Band…

gotta-have-popfor-t-shirtPete Kashur: woo hoo, I’m gonna go over the old man’s head here….just got confirmation from all the ‘GHP’ Segarini’s…we’ll be together on stage at this year’s IPO at the Rivoli on November 28th…bob will keep you up to speed on the details as they develop…

king tutMark Vukovich: Classic..! Great read. Your take on California thru “Hideaway” is so spot on Bob…we were so fortunate to grow up and have that total freedom of the Sixties…quite a comedown with the advent of AID’s, tho…! Still reading about the rest of the songs…mucho gusto Bro..! Does Eddie know about this song…my one time karate student and my Long Time Connection…man did we have some times…! Wow…the Marley, Mancini Stones thing cracked me up…thanks for puttin’ a smile on this old cragy face…! Vuke in Lodi…forgot you wanted to know where your readers are..! And that is Steve Martin…isn’t it…? Nah that was you playing Steve Martin…very cool tho and even Jim Morrison…what no Jimi…?

SEG SAYS: Nope, not Steve, and not me. The Steve Martin clone is a comedian from Calgary named Dennis Taylor. He was brought to us by Howie Mandel at the Hotel California one night, and that story has been told here before…or I think it has. If not, I’ll tell it another time. Suffice it to say, Dennis was sooo good at channeling Steve Martin that a lot of people who saw him with us in Toronto, Ottawa, and on television still think it was the ‘Wild and Crazy’ guy himself.

Jim Chisholm: Bob, You’ve had lots of great columns here but this one might be the best yet. Great vids too.

Pete Kashur: Like Paul Shaeffer except for the ‘no money’ part….but at least I have hair…and it ain’t much but still is more than him…truthfully, I’d rather have the money…

A nice note from GWNtertainment…

Jaimie Vernon: Thanks for the plug, Bob [blush]

SEG SAYS: Ahh hell, here it is again in case you missed it the first time. Check it out, folks… www.gwntertainment.com

Denise Donlon…

Frank Gutch Jr.: Denise Donlon is hilarious! She should write a book. Those are the kinds of stories that reach way outside of the music biz and yet are crucial to the understanding of the heydays of rock. Thanks for that bit of history from the bathroom… It made my day!

Lisa McDonald: I’d definitely like to read a book by Denise Donlon.

SEG SAYS: Denise is a treasure. Hopefully, she’ll let us bug her for some more stories…

More Segarini Band…

Vegas Jones: Love reading your stuff…Say….bio says you hosted Late Great Movies on City TV…was that *you* doing the “you’re watching late great movies etc…” voiceover?

SEG SAYS: I did my share of “City TV…Everywhere’s” when I was with the weblet. I just found a “Best of” reel of those shows and will see about getting some YouTubed…

Don Paterson: Hey Bob; I was in CBC Radio studio R the day you came in for the Morningside interview promoting Gotta… very cool.

SEG SAYS: Peter Gzowski, right? I can’t remember it all that well…it was, like, 7:00 in the morning, and in those days, THAT was bedtime…

Two BobsToni Ambiel: LOVED DBAWIS! Never heard it before! More vids…please, WOW! Well I just listened to the DBAWIS video 4 times. Never heard this song before, loved it. The story about how you wrote it made it even better. It reminded me of watching the Family Tree @ the Crystal… & your remarkable voice! However the way you are dressed is quite a bit different??? Since I haven’t seen you since those days, the “Crystal” image of you is stuck in my head/heart. More please.

Peter Kashur: I miss hair…and seeing my feet

Denise Keirsead: lol!! Love reading all the history and really enjoyed the videos. Nice of you all to share YOU GUYS ROCK!!

Kim Haworth: Those videos brought back great memories of that concert! I taped it back then on a crappy portable tape recorder and I wore the tape out. To this day I still remember the words to that little “tribute” to the Cars! I didn’t even remember Elvis so it was great to see it….again!!

Rose Dooley: I remember the press release party for this one! I was working as an agent for Astro productions at the time. WoW, what a time warp!

Kath McConnell:

Hey Rose, i remember you bringing the glasses home. :) )

SEG SAYS: The glasses were pop glasses that we gave away at the party with the Segarini and Gotta Have Pop logos on them. They were cool, weren’t they. I used to have a set of them until I finally lost them all in one of my moves from one house to another.

Lisa McDonald: I just love that live clip of Don’t Believe a Word I Say. I musta watched it a dozen times since yesterday!

Michele Hartley: You’re just too cool Bob.  As much as I enjoy everything you write, you’re vocals are just too cool not to be putting out more albums!  Damn I wish I had the money to back you.  Oh well, being your Texas fan makes me happy enough I reckon.  I should of gotten into oil and not horses I reckon.  I’ll shut up for this week.

J. Lawrence Ingles: This song by the Bee Gees
Now has new meaning for me.
But how did they get away with it.
I really really enjoyed this commentary on Gotta Have Pop.
BRUUUUCE CaptionedFinally !
Those videos are awesome.
I forgot how good that show was.
And how I was mesmerized and became an instant fan.
And how I couldn’t stand Springsteen for years until I reluctantly went to see him at the Gardens on the River Tour…and had a religious conversion.
I immediately auditioned for Don Denaburgs Springsteen cover band.
Perhaps the first tribute I’d ever heard of… Beatlemamia and Velvet Elvises
Notwithstanding.  The band was called Carona then and just changing the name to River Street. I was 16.
I choked on Jungleland in the audition
On my parents baby grand in the living room.
Who know it would take another
30 years to get into the band.
Don has kicked me out twice.

SEG SAYS: Yeah…now that you mention it, that Bee Gees tune does take on a whole different spin, doesn’t it? Thanks for the kind words, and I’m glad you finally became a devout follower of Saint Springsteen. The first time I ever saw him was in a high school Gymnasium in West Orange, New Jersey…at least that’s where I think I was. Hanging out in New York can do that to you…

Some nice shout-outs from a few great bands…

Tim Chaisson: Hey Bob,
Just wanted to say it was nice meeting you in Toronto at Indie Week. We had a great time! Hopefully you had to chance to listen the album. I actually just sent one off to a friend of yours, Frank Gutch Jr. Hopefully he has good words for it!
Any-who, I’ll let you know the next time we’re kicking around Toronto and hopefully we may see you out :)
Take care,

Chasing Jones: Hi Bob,
Just wanted to drop in and say a quick “Hey! How are you doing?” I hope you had a great thanksgiving. Our weekend was definitely a good time filled with family, friends and music. Thanks for your support and keep in touch.

Vanessa McLean: Hi Bob,
I just wanted to drop you a message to let you know that it was really nice meeting you last Thursday!  I hope you’ve had time to recover from Indie Week. Thanksgiving was a sweet day off this year… :0)
The band and myself all read your blog Don’t believe a word I say on FYI….Thank you so much for the beautiful compliments about Mad June…It really gave us a nice boost…We’re all pretty nervous and excited about the cd coming out…but i guess you know what I’m talking about…Our 1st CD eeeekkkkkkkkkk…can’t wait…
We’d love to send you a copy of our cd as soon as we have it……We should receive them in the next couple of weeks…Let me know where we should send it.
Hope you are having a great week!!!

SEG SAYS: So much great music being made by so many talented and hard working people. Thanks for the music, and keep doing what you do…

Thanks to all of you who wrote and shared your stories with us. That’s why we’re here. See you all on Wednesday…

That’s enough for now. Email me at segarini@fyimusic.ca with your comments, complaints, and thoughts, and remember…don’t believe a word I say.

DBAWIS ButtonBob “The Iceman” Segarini was in the bands The Family Tree, Roxy, The Wackers, The Dudes, The Segarini Band, and Cats And Dogs, and nominated for a Juno for production in 1978. I am really saddened by the news of Bartolemews Bishop’s passing. .. Providence’s “Ever Sense The Dawn” has for a long time been one of my favorite “Hidden gem” albums… I especially love turning on Moody Blues fans to it… it’s really something special… Bob and Andy still live in Portland, and most of the string section went on to play with various orchestras around the country…
I didn’t realize that he was Steven Bishop’s brother, thanks for the info… Yes, a great musician and the world is a little less warm today for the loss… R.I.P. Bart…

Whoops… that’s what happens when you’re typing at a hundred miles an hour.. RANDY Bishop, not Steven…

Greg Simpson October 26, 2009 at 9:02 pm

Sorry to learn about Paul Naumann…interesting that I caught it in an opinion column, rather than on the news…so….about the Green Room and Fryfogel’s…you’ve put it off long enough

pete kashur October 26, 2009 at 9:49 pm

nope, the hotel california days haven’t been done yet…..howie mandel, dennis taylor….why the band wanted to have you killed….how to create a media buzz with 129 hard-core fans….

Toni October 27, 2009 at 2:31 pm

Did get some won’t power in my late 30s, just in time to get my shit together. Thanks for the CB Bob pic! No matter how old we get we can look back and KNOW that we were young at the BEST time in history!!!

Saw Mott the Hoople last month in the UK – that was great. Never thought that I would have a chance to see that. Any chance that I’ll ever see a Wackers concert.

Dennis Taylor November 26, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Hey,

I was doing some surfing when I came across this site. I just want to say hi to Pete and Bob.

I’m still in Calgary doing the oil industry thing and pretty well have nothing to do with show business anymore. Been married to the same woman for 25 years, too.

Nice to see you guys are alive and kicking. I have more stuff to post in case the people reading this don’t believe you that it was me imitating Steve Martin.

BTW, that was 30 years ago, guys.

See ya.
