European parliament passes copyright extension

by David on April 24, 2009

With 377 voting yes to 178 no votes the controversial and drawn out copyright extension passed in the European Parliament voted this morning to allow copyright term extension to pass a first reading, but the length was trimmed from the expected 90 years to 75.

The proposal now moves forward to the Council of Ministers where it is currently blocked by member states. The fundamental problems remain: how to include a workable use-it-or-lose it clause.

Discussions on the proposal will be held in the Council of Ministers.
