BUBLE MAKES CHART HISTORY: “Haven’t Met You Yet,” the co-penned
single from Michael Bublé’s new studio album, Crazy Love, has become the 1st track to debut at #1 on the Adult Contemporary (AC) radio charts in the 13 year history of radio monitoring service BDS Canada.
By debuting at #1 at AC radio, Michael Bublé has topped himself. “Everything,” his self-penned single from the album Call Me Irresponsible, debuted at #3 and then reached #1 after only fifteen days. “Everything” stayed at the top of the chart for 25 weeks – the longest running #1 single at any format. In all, Buble’s four previous singles – “Home,” “Save The Last Dance (For Me),” “Everything” and “Lost” – have combined for over 200,000 spins and 63 weeks at #1 in Canada.
“A number one debut at any format is an amazing accomplishment,” says BDD director Paul Tuch. “To debut at number one on the AC chart where new songs tend to take many weeks before reaching a high enough rotation to move up the chart, makes it that much more impressive.”
Crazy Love, Michael Bublé’s first studio recording in 21/2 years, features two original songs along with his always unique take on 11 standards from various eras is scheduled to be released on Friday, Oct. 9.
The multi Grammy and Juno Award winning artist hunkered down in recording studios in LA, Brooklyn, New York and his hometown of Vancouver for the last six months to make his “ultimate record about the inevitable roller coaster ride of relationships.” The album’s first single, “Haven’t Met You Yet,” was written by Bublé (with Alan Chang and Amy Foster). Additional tunes on the album include “Cry Me A River,” “You’re Nobody Till Somebody Loves You,” “Georgia On My Mind” and “Baby (You’ve Got What It Takes)” which was performed with Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings. The title song is a cover of the Van Morrison gem Crazy Love. Bublé also performs a duet with Canadian songwriter Ron Sexsmith on a version Sexsmith’s own Top 5 hit, “Whatever It Takes.” The CD closes out with a version of “Stardust” which is performed with the acapella group Naturally 7. The album was produced by David Foster, Bob Rock and Humberto Gatica.
Bublé has sold over 22 million CDs worldwide. His previous album, the award-winning Call Me Irresponsible (2007) was a #1 album in over 15 countries. His 05 album, It’s Time holds the record as the longest running title to remain on the Billboard Traditional Jazz charts – a full two years. It sat in the Number One position for over 80 weeks. He has had two Number One singles, “Everything” and “Home” which was also a Number One hit for Blake Shelton on the Country charts.
TERRY BROWN HAS BLURRED VISION: Iranian-born brothers Sepehr and
Soheil, the musical and political passion behind Blurred Vision perform a free concert in Toronto’s Mel Lastman Square to support the movement for freedom in Iran on Friday, Sept. 18 from 8 to 10 pm. According to publicist/manager Kathy Hahn, the band will be performing material from a forthcoming album which is set to go into production later this year with Terry Brown behind the Toronto east-end Blister Factory studio console. Brown’s credits include nailing down Blue Rodeo’s ’sound’ on the the band’s auspicious debut album and engineering or producing an mix of Canadian acts that includes Allanah Myles, FM, Klaatu, Max Webster, and Rush.
Since the start of the protests in Iran in early June, founding members of Blurred Vision – Iranian born brothers Sepehr and Soheil have been speaking out against the brutality and murderous methods of the Islamic Republic, including interviews on CNN and CBC. They also recorded a song entitled “Hafiz…Rise” calling upon the great Persian poet and mystic, Hafiz for guidance and dedicated this video to their brothers and sisters in Iran who were – and still are – fighting for their most basic human rights.
The band’s website has been setup as a portal for their fellow peers and youth in Iran to stream live video from their cell phones as a method to keep the images and voice of the people alive. Unfortunately the website has been blocked in Iran since the start of the uprising. The regime has taken horrific measures to keep media and information from leaking out of Iran.
NORAH JONES: Multiple Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Norah
Jones has announced the title and release date of her upcoming album, The Fall, her fourth studio album which will be released by EMI’s Blue Note Records on November 17. Jones has also revealed the cover artwork for the album, which features a portrait by photographer Autumn de Wilde.
Since coming on the scene in 2002, Jones’ has sold a collective 36 million albums worldwide. Her three studio albums, 2002’s eight-time Grammy Award-winning Come Away With Me, 2004’s Feels Like Home, and 2007’s Not Too Late have gone to No. 1 around the world. Her last album even spent five weeks at #1 on the Canadian Soundscan Album Charts. All three have been certified multi-platinum, while Come Away With Me has been certified diamond in Canada.
SMELLS LIKE DION: Celine Dion’s website more often than not resembles Amazon with its array of goods and services it has on offer to her fans worldwide.
We remember going slack-jawed last year on receipt of a pitch for a-pricey plexiglass-encased shard of the stage floor Ms. Dion performed on in Vegas. The latest offering we’ve received is a new Dion-inspired fragrance. Here’s the seductive pitch: “Journey to an extraordinary place with Spring in Provence. Inspired by the picturesque landscape of the South of France this fresh, brilliant fragrance captures the peaceful enchantment of this beloved region. The sublime scent will take you to the serenity of Provence, with its warm sunlight and sparkling joie de vivre – a magical journey for the senses.”
The pitch comes with a 15% introductory discount. If you want to be up to snuff with Dion toiletries, you can link here to make your purchases.
ONE SONG A WEEK – New York Post: In a quiet, bright apartment in Astoria, an inspired mind began a year-long project 10 weeks ago that she would document online.
This is not the Julie/Julia project – where an amateur chef from Queens follows in the culinary footsteps of Julia Child. This is Jamie Stellini, a 32-year-old musician who is writing and recording one song per week for an entire year and posting the work on her Web site, theweeklysong.com.
“I think a lot of people don’t realize that creating music isn’t this special thing that only special people can do,” Stellini said. “I hope that this project is inspiring to people. Musicians are really just people telling stories.”
Stellini, who describes her music as indie, folk and alternative-country, began “The Weekly Song” after a tumultuous period in her life. After living in New Orleans for two years under the wing of famed jazz musician Eddie Bo, Stellini said she began to experience manic episodes.
She spent a year back in New York dealing with what she learned was bipolar disorder, as well as a bad relationship, and didn’t write or record for a year.
MJ BURIED IN STYLE – NY Daily News: Michael Jackson was buried with one white glove, sunglasses and dressed with pearl beads and a large gold belt, his sister, La Toya, said in an interview late Friday.
“He was dressed in all white pearl beads going across, draped across (and) a beautiful big gold belt … like a belt that you win being a boxer,” La Toya Jackson told Barbara Walters in a “20/20″ interview.
KAYNE NOT TOO SWIFT -NME: Kanye West’s VMA Stage Invasion – Another Stage-Managed MTV Controversy? That’s a supposition put forward by NME. The Brit music tab says: “This always happens. Whether it’s Eminem getting a face-full of Bruno’s arse earlier this year or Britney kissing Madonna, in each case it’s painfully obvious that said “controversy” is entirely stage-managed and rehearsed in a bid to generate the maximum online coverage for MTV – yet every time the blogosphere colludes in the absurd fantasy that this is a wild, freewheeling rock’n'roll event in which anything could happen.”
But the New York Post blames Kayne West’s outburst on booze. Citing a report carried in the paper…”An apparently drunk Kanye West callously stole the spotlight from country superstar Taylor Swift last night, moments after she won at the MTV Video Music Awards.
The Post goes on to say “West had been seen partying long before the VMAs began, gulping down an open bottle of Hennessy cognac on the red carpet. ”
THE RISE OF THE MUSIC FAN – Hypebot: When marketer Seth Godin talks, people listen. In his Ted Talks video, Sliced Bread And Other Marketing Delights, he covers a wide range of topics that I would like to expand on.
Godin argues that at the heart of spreading ideas is TV and stuff like TV. Within the system that he calls the TV-Industrial Complex he explains the process of how early companies figured out how to spread their ideas by buying ads, which got them more distribution, this allowed them to make a bigger profit, and they then turned around to use the money to buy more ads, thus completing a cycle.
He goes on to say that companies used this complex to touch people in a way that they weren’t expecting, in a way they didn’t necessarily want, with an ad over and over again until they bought that product. What the marketers who brought us the likes of Fruity Pebbles and Pop Tarts have found over the last couple of years is that these old ways are no longer working. Record Labels used a system very Broken_record similar to this idea, but added a few steps.
1. Release the single 3 months before release
2. Pay mass radio to play song, 3 times an hour
3. 1 ½ months before release send MTV and Fuse video
4. Release album on a Tuesday with other popular artists
5. Rise up the Billboard charts
6. Use profits to buy more distribution and tour support
7. Release the second single 2 months after release
8. Pay mass radio to play song, 3 times an hour
9. Top the billboard at #1
10. Make second video
11. Start tour of the United States
12. Halfway through, release third single
13. Make third video
14. Finish the tour dates
15. Use whatever money the label didn’t take to go on three year journey
16. Find your inner self before continuing to work on second album
17. Do it all over again
MILEY CYRUS IS ON THE LINE – New York Times: That hoariest of social networking devices — the telephone — is making a comeback among
Facebook, MySpace and Twitter are now considered essential parts of the entertainment factory’s marketing arsenal. Add another service to the list: SayNow, a tiny Silicon Valley company whose low-key approach — connecting stars and their fans through voice mail — is gaining traction, particularly among teenage audiences.
…A newly introduced “live” function allows celebrities to hold what are essentially giant conference calls, chattering away as thousands of fans listen on mute.
Artists can also return calls for one-on-one conversations that are broadcast to the group, something that the pop singer Jesse McCartney recently did. “When I come down to Texas, I expect you in the front row,” he recently told a weeping Catherine from Fort Worth. Her response: “I will definitely be there!”

“Dad often ended his concerts with a toast to the audience that said, ‘May you all live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine.’ With the launch of Sinatra Family Estates, we toast our father,” says Nancy, Tina, and Frank Sinatra, Jr in a statement.

BOB LEFSETZ’ is famous because he is articulate and isn’t afraid to voice an opinion. We had to roll our eyes and protect our ears when he hyped the new Don Was-producer Delbert McLinton album (sadly, Delbert has lost his voice and there’s no hiding the fact), but he nails the sentiments of many on the outrageously tacky Guitar Hero 5 featuring Nirvana pounding out arena-rocker Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love A Bad Name.” Here’s what Bob has to say in a few short lines: “Courtney Love may be insane, but whether she signed the contract or not, I’m sure there was no agreement that Kurt could sing “You Give Love A Bad Name”. Bon Jovi is everything Kurt stood against. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” killed hair metal, now you’ve got him singing this pop tripe in a video game?
“You might say it’s only a video game, but that’s disrespectful. We must honor our heroes. And you may not care, but Kurt Cobain is still a hero to millions, the icon of a generation. Why not have an animatronic JFK spewing Richard Nixon lines?
“Activision should destroy each and every copy of Guitar Hero 5. And only release it when this footage/game play has been eviscerated.
“This is a crime against the history of rock and roll. What were they thinking?
“Rust never sleeps and commerce is always ready to dishonor the past.
If they don’t destroy and redo, we should boycott their profitmaking, gluttonous product.
“Money might change everything, but it doesn’t EXPLAIN everything!”

BEATLEMANIA, NASHVILLE STYLE – Kevin J. Coyne, Country Universe:
I’ve been working my way through the Beatles Remasters that were released earlier this week, thoroughly enjoying myself in the process. As I listened to Help!, I heard Ringo Starr doing his best Buck Owens imitation as they covered “Act Naturally.”
It’s pretty darn cool that the Beatles covered Buck Owens, and plenty of country artists have returned the favor ever since. With the Beatles all over the media these days, it seems as good a time as any to look back on some of country music’s biggest and best takes on the Beatles catalog:
Rosanne Cash, “I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party” and “I’m Only Sleeping”
Cash is the only country artist to score a #1 hit with a cover of a Beatles song, as her take on the Beatles For Sale track “I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party” became her eleventh and final #1 hit in 1989. An even better listen is her take on “I’m Only Sleeping” from her Retrospective release. It doesn’t hurt that it’s a much better song than “Party”, pulled from Revolver, arguably the best album the Beatles ever made.
Nickel Creek, “Taxman”
This progressive bluegrass band sounds great on record, but you don’t really get the full experience of their talent until you’ve seen their live show. Perhaps all of those royalties from their platinum-selling debut album pushed them into a higher tax bracket, as “Taxman” – another Revolver highlight – soon became a staple of their live shows.
DEAD COMPOSERS SOCIETY: Symphony Nova Scotia presents a series of free concerts in its second annual Symphony Week, running Tuesday, Sept. 22 to Sunday, September 27. As is often the case with classical music events, the schedule is almost singular in its focus on long dead, white composers of European extraction. When the classical world wakes up from its Rip Van Winkle-type doze and realizes several centuries have elapsed since Schumann, Haydn, Bach and Beethoven were scoring anything new, chances are audiences will have ceased caring.
This said, we are heartened to see that there is one event set for Sept. 25 that focusses on works by emerging film composers.
SOCIAL MEDIA – Brad On Broadcast: We’ll look back on 2009 as the year when
social media became legitimate. There has been explosive growth in the social media landscape. YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and many other sites now command more eyeballs than television ever did. These spaces are personal and immediate, and they connect on an intimate level.
During the Iranian crisis, many of the first video and pictures came from Twitter, not from CNN news crews or BBC reporters, but from everyday citizens using their cell phones, SMS and their Twitter accounts. Similar reporting came from the recent China natural disaster. There were no news crews on-site, only everyday citizens. But, they had cell phones and could send messages and images.
… social media Web sites represent the next generation of information delivery. Let’s look closer at these new competitors.
What is the most-viewed video Web site in the world? You probably answered YouTube. In March, YouTube claimed 100 million monthly U.S.-based viewers. YouTube is predicted to serve up 75 billion video streams to 375 million unique views this year. –Thanks to Warren for this
ROTTEN APPLE: According to a report carried in Music Ally , the new iTunes LP album format, which addes interactive elements to digital albums sold through the Apple store, the new format is non-interactive with iPhones or iPod touches. Specifically, the elements – lyrics, artwork and son on – won’t sync across. the first batch of iTunes LPs are available on the iTunes Store, although users will have to upgrade to the new iTunes 9 software to get them. Pricing? Up to labels, according to the company– they may want to charge extra, or simply add iTunes LP content to already-more-expensive remasters or special releases as part of the deal.
ROYALTY ON THE MOVE: Effective Sept. 25, Royalty Records and affiliated companies will be relocating. The new mailing address will be: PO Box 4099, Edmonton, AB T6E 4S8. Phone, fax and emails remain the same.
TIED THE KNOT: According to Rick Ringer’s Facebook page, this past weekend the Wasaga Beachy broadcaster, best known for his CHUM FM tour of duty, tied the know with Donna Lynn Stewart this past weekend.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO Gary O’Brien, one-time MD at CFGM when Greg Slaight was running the Country AM out of a two-storey house in Brampton. O’Brien was also a long-standing Country columnist for The Record during the 198s. We can report now that Gary O’Brien is alive and well and relocated to Montreal where he is selling for ReMax and can be reached through his Facebook page. Good to hear from you, after all these years, Gary.
