Juno Awards earn thumbs up the morning following
The general consensus in reading post Juno Awards coverage is that the show was a success, Nickelback deserved their night of glory, host Russell Peters outdid himself this year, and the excitement inside GM Place in Vancouver was palpable. That said, bumping the Junos by one hour to plug in a scheduled American reality show between the red carpet treatment and the show itself was, at the very least, distatestful, and the host’s often times crass sense of humour must have sent many viewers scurrying to another channel or simply moving them to hit the ‘off’ button on the TV. This said, the overall post-show reaction is more than positive. Here’s a rundown of what the major dailies have to say.
The Hollywood Reporter headlined a straight-up countdown of the show, headlined with Nickelback tops Canada’s Juno awards, the Calgary Herald offered up the ‘best and worst’ moments from the show, and Nickelback hogged the headlines in the Canadian Press, Globe & Mail and the and Sun newspapers. The Vancouver Sun, along with the National Post, provided extensive coverage of the red carpet show opener, and enthused over the actual musical event inside GM Place. The Canwest-owned National Post also provided live blogging from the show, rating host Russell Peters with an above average score.
The CBC also provided live blogging from backstage at the show, and on the red carpet opener – as well as a thoughtful interview profile of nominee Zaki Ibrahim. At the Toronto Star, music critic Ben Rayner offered up an enthusiastic overview, and in the same paper, entertainment writer Raju Mudhar enthused over host Russell Peters, but not all the newspaper readers shared his unbending praise.
