Maia Davis, musician, songwriter and vocalist with the group Ladies of the Canyon, makes a point about the lawlessness on the internet devestating and decimating the creative community’s ability to rightly earn a living in an editorial appearing in the Montreal Gazette. Below an extract from her article, with a link to read the complete file.
“…Unfortunately, in today’s digital world, this right has somehow been lost when it comes to what I create – music. Granted, music might not be as vitally important as, say, medical equipment or police services. But if we can agree that all workers should be compensated for their work, how is it that many people can so casually overlook their responsibility to pay for the artist’s work when they download illegally?
“Is it because social perception of a so-called “fame and fortune” industry, as in the case of popular modern music, has labelled the creators of music an elite, unworthy of just compensation? Or is it the artist’s lie-down-and-take-it mentality that makes us easy targets?…”
